We head north, where the roads end and the true desert begins. Along the way, the green hills of Dhofar gradually give way to rocky plains and the first sand dunes — the landscape changes right before your eyes.
01. Departure from Salalah
The first stop is the Shisr area, associated with the legendary city of Ubar, long thought to be a myth. It was discovered in the late 20th century using satellite images. Here, the ruins of an ancient fortress and wells remain, where caravans once stopped on their way across the desert.
02. Shisr Village — The Lost City of Ubar
Next begins the main part of the journey — Rub’ al Khali, one of the largest deserts in the world. Waves of dunes stretch to the horizon, the space becomes almost silent, and the light gradually shifts from golden to soft pink. We will make several stops: climbing the dunes, taking photos, and simply taking time to feel the vastness of the desert.
The sun slowly sets behind the dunes, the sand turns red-orange, and the desert seems to pause. During this time, we will have a short picnic with tea and light snacks to quietly enjoy the moment.
04. Sunset in the Desert and Picnic
After sunset, we head back, returning to the city in the dark, with the feeling of a true journey.
